The “Foce del Fiume Platani” Oriented Nature Reserve

description

The “Foce del Fiume Platani” Oriented Nature Reserve spans 206.88 hectares and extends into the municipalities of Ribera and Cattolica Eraclea. Established to protect the coastal ecosystem and its diverse bird species, this reserve is a haven of natural beauty. Nestled beneath the imposing Capo Bianco cliffs, the Foce del Fiume Platani is a breathtaking natural site. It serves as the first stop for numerous migratory birds traveling from Africa. Thanks to its diverse environments, this area provides a lush and varied habitat for a rich and diverse avian population. The reserve encompasses the final stretch of the Platani River, which forms a wide meander just before flowing into the sea, as well as the extensive sandy expanse of Borgo Bonsignore, lined by low dunes. During migration periods, various migratory bird species rest along the riverbanks. Among them are the Grey Heron, the Black-winged Stilt, the Pied Avocet, the Eurasian Oystercatcher, and the Peregrine Falcon.
